    konocef covid-19 volunteers

In resuming our weekly profiles of women and girls making headlines in Kono District and the Diaspora, we begin with the amazing work of Konocef volunteers - most of them are secondary and senior secondary school students in Kono who have taken the time during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop their leadership skills and give back to their communities.  Although thus far, Kono District has only three recorded cases, Konocef and other NGOs and community based organizations are doing their part to contain the spread of the virus and continue to empower girls and women through culturally sensitive health sensitization campaigns.

From their participation in COVID-19 response training programs to their door to door sensitization activities throughout Koidu City, these female high school students in Kono are leading the way in promoting community health, making face masks, advocating for continuing education via radio broadcasts, warning against increased pregnancy due to the country-wide shut down as well as providing information on menstrual hygiene and distributing sanitary napkins.

Led by project manager, Mani Ngaujah, Konocef volunteers are making an impact in the most disaffected areas of the capital city and reaching out to girls and women in the poorest sections of town.  The students have put together 1,000 care packages that include washable and reusable face masks, hand sanitizers, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary napkins and vivid flyers depicting advice on prevention and treatment of the coronavirus.

I am an award-winning journalist based in Kono District.  I love to write about politics in Sierra Leone as well as social, economic and political issues closer to home in Kono.  I have started this blog as a way to recognize the wonderful achievements of Kono women at home and in the Diaspora and to show young girls, especially KonoCEF distinguished awardees and hundreds of our schoolgirl volunteers the success of female role models from our own communities.
